La torre "mozza"

Torre medievale della cinta muraria del castello di Calcinaia. La torre, costruita interamente in laterizio, rappresentava l’accesso settentrionale del castello, con il doppio arco a tutto sesto chiuso in origine da un portale in legno, i cui alloggi per i cardini sono ancora parzialmente conservati nella struttura.

L’edificio è una delle dieci torri della fortificazione di Calcinaia, costruita negli anni ’80 del XIII secolo. La torre in origine era merlata, mentre la rifortificazione tardo trecentesca del castello ne ha previsto il rialzamento e l’apertura delle finestrelle sui prospetti principali.

Ad essa si legava la cinta muraria, come si vede dalla porzione di muratura sul lato ovest, e la porta sul prospetto occidentale aveva funzione di accesso al camminamento lungo le mura.

"Mozza" Tower
 

Medieval tower  within the walls of Calcinaia castle. This tower, built entirely of brick, constituted the northern entrance of the castle, with a semicircular double arch that was originally closed by a wooden door, the hinge housings of which are still partially preserved in the structure.
The building is one of the ten towers of the  fortifications of Calcinaia, built in the 1280s. The tower was originally crenellated, whilst the re-fortification of the castle in the late fourteenth century involved the raising and opening of the windows on the main façades.
It was connected to the walls, as can be seen from the portion of the wall to the west, and the door on the west side was used to access the walkway along the walls.
